| Abstract | |
Objective:This study aimed to compare the integration of auditory and visual cues in the multimodal perception task of voiceless fricatives in children with and without PD. Assuming that phonological disorder could influence how children perform the integration of auditory-visual cues, the hypothesis is that children with PD have worse performance in the integration of auditory and visual cues since the PD could be associated with an impaired capacity to integrate phonological information from two-mode sources. Methods: This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (REC) of the São Paulo State University ―Júlio de Mesquita Filho‖ (Unesp), Campus of Marília, under protocol nº 15416819.6.0000.5406. Thirty children were tested, being 15 diagnosed with phonological disorder involving problems to produce fricatives (GE) and 15 with typical speech development (GC). The presented stimuli consisted of audio and video recordings of the production of syllables with simple syllabic pattern: /f/, /s/ and /ʃ/ in the context of the vowel /a/. The multimodal perception task, using the Opensesame software, involved the stimuli presentation only by auditory pathway; (2) the stimuli presentation only by visual pathway; and (3a) simultaneous presentation of the auditory and visual stimuli congruently; (3b) simultaneous presentation of the auditory and visual stimuli incongruously. In the analysis were considered the accuracy (% of correct answers), % of perceptual preference in incongruent audiovisual condition, and the reaction time through different conditions of the stimuli presentation. Results: The repeated measures Anova showed a statistically significant for group, for conditions as well as for interaction between group*conditions. Tukey´s Post-hoc test showed worst accuracy for the PD mainly in the only visual pathway compared to typical children. In the analysis of audiovisual stimuli incongruent, the repeated measures Anova showed a significant main effect for conditions and interaction between group*conditions. Tukey´s. Post-Hoc showed that both groups based on the auditory pathway in the incongruent condition, but typically children presented the highest percentage of the correct response. Concerning the reaction time, repeated measures Anova showed a statistically significant for group and conditions. Children with PD presented a longer reaction time than typical children. Tukey´s Post-hoc showed a longer reaction time for the visual condition in both groups. Conclusion: Children with PD presented worse performance and longer reaction time in the multimodal perception task, suggesting difficulties in integrating phonological information from two-mode sources.
