Abstract

Giardia is an important intestinal protozoon related to diarrhea in animals and humans, transmitted by fecal oral route. Despite giardiasis representing an important word public health problem, little is known about the effective role of animals in epidemiology, even with the development of molecular techniques that allowed considerable progress in the identification and classification of this protozoan. The aim of the present study was set the prevalence of Giardia sp. in dogs, cats and small ruminants, in addition to detect the molecular diversity of Giardia duodenalis assessing gdh (glutamate dehydrogenase), bg (β-giardin) and tpi (phosphate isomerase) loci in dogs and cats from Botucatu, SP. The assessment of what assemblages are involved is important for evaluate the role of companion and production animals as potential reservoirs of human infection. Fecal samples were evaluated by centrifugal-flotation method, with prevalence of 8.7%, 10.4% and 6.6% for dogs, cats and small ruminants, respectively. From the molecular analyzes there was a higher prevalence of assemblages C, D, A, respectively for dogs, and for cats assemblages A, B, C, E and F were detected, with assemblage A the most prevalent, followed by F. There was no correlate between zoonotic assemblages and domiciled animals. The detection of assemblages A and B is an important step to suggest a zoonotic potential and to indicate the participation of dogs, cats and humans in the transmission of G. duodenalis, increasing the possibility of a public health problem involving giardiasis.
