Abstract

The present work aims to analyze in the state of Maranhão how the phenomenon known in the history of the Catholic Church in Brazil took place, as Catholic Restoration in the period between the 1930s and 1940s. The “Restoration” as understood by Brazilian historiography was the strategy used by Catholic Church in order to demonstrate to the political elites the importance and weight of Catholicism in Brazilian society in the first half of the 20th century. As in practically all Brazilian states, in Maranhão, the Church sought to organize large public demonstrations of faith such as the famous Catholic congresses, in addition to organizing the laity for a more effective performance in society from the creation of several groups formed by faithful with functions diverse but mainly charitable and devotional and consolidation of production and consolidation of a Catholic press with the function of being the official disseminator of moralizing guidelines in the society of Maranhão in the period.
