Abstract

This thesis investigates the trajectory of José Petronilo de Santa Cruz (1918-1997) and Livraria Duas Cidades, in order to examine the role played by the bookseller-editor and his company in the formation of a cultural and intellectual field in the city of São Paulo, between 1950 and 1970. By the proposed objective, we structured the work into five chapters. In the first, From the northeastern viscera to the Dominican life, we approach the family lineages of José Petronilo, his entry into religious life adopting the name of Friar Benevenuto, his activities as dominican, friend of father Lebret, member of the Economy and Humanism movement, and his first incursions into the bookseller and publishing universe. In The city of good we analyze the relations of the friar with politicians and patrons, in addition to his performance in the cultural sphere until he founded Duas Cidades in 1954 - a bookstore and publishing house that existed until 2006 in the capital of São Paulo. Motivated by Catholic Action and the Second Vatican Council, Friar Benevenuto commercialized and edited philosophical and theological titles linked to progressive catholic thought of the 1960s. In the third chapter, The dictatorship invaded the bookstore, we describe the action of the police agents of the civil-military regime against the establishment, in 1969, where we analyze the consequences of this episode for the greater approximation of the friar with the academic environment and his renunciation of the soutane in 1972. In The city of men, we mapped his dispute with the Dominican Order and his work as bookseller-editor in the 1970s, a period in which he became known to clients, readers and authors as Professor Santa Cruz, promoting an inflection in the profile of books edited and imported by the house. A close friend of literary critic Antonio Candido, he published some of the best fruits of the USP human and social sciences and the other institutions. And we conclude the thesis with Poetry, music and affection in the two cities of Santa Cruz, where we present the circle of affections around the bookseller-editor. We start from his relationship with his wife Maria Antonia, we follow the editions about music and poetry, and we deal with his friendship with Augusto Massi, responsible for the Claro Enigma collection, a project that reaffirmed the Livraria Duas Cidades as a Brazilian cultural dynamo from the city of São Paulo.
