Abstract

In view of the difficulties that still exist in managing, conserving, preserving and giving access to digital archival records, this thesis addresses the studies offered by the Digital Archival Forensics Diplomatics, in an attempt to confront these dilemmas. These studies aim to analyze and discuss the maintenance of authenticity in institutional routines and processes, as well as the potential source of evidence in possible legal and legal scenarios. The hypothesis is based on the possibility of applying the concepts of these two sciences throughout the life cycle of born-digital records, as a guarantee of authenticity and preservation. The general objective is to identify and characterize the contributions offered, both by digital Diplomatics and digital Forensics, within the archival, administrative and legal context. It also addresses the theoretical and practical subsidies of these two sciences, so that records meet the sufficient requirements, as a guarantee of the means of proof in the different contexts in which they are required. Likewise, in the long-term preservation of these digital records, due to the fragility of the systems where they are stored and the permanent risks of obsolescence, both in hardware and software. The application of digital Diplomatics supports in the authenticity analysis process through the traditional external and internal elements of the documentary form. Digital Forensics, in turn, provides technological methods and tools so that the integrity of data remains intact, with the purpose of being presented in different scenarios, in addition to archival or administrative ones. The methodology used is characterized by being qualitative in nature with theoretical analysis, and descriptive-exploratory. Some archival theories and principles were analyzed, starting initially from the bibliographical review, for the delimitation of the study object and the improvement of the scientific basis. The results obtained in national and international experiences allowed establishing the possibility of linking and creating a consolidated science, called Digital Archival Forensic Diplomatics, as a response to the challenges arising in these contexts. The conclusion arises from the need to continue deepening the ongoing international research, especially in relation to digital Forensics, which is producing interesting answers in the creation, maintenance and preservation of reliable digital records.
