Abstract

This study examines literature of crime that circulated in the city of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo between 1870 and 1920. The analysis done here is based on the assumption that readers, editors and authors had a common interest in the publishing feuilletons and novels that had crime as the main theme. These narratives, published by a number of newspapers, typographers, and editors, are analyzed here taking into account their production and circulation context. Here the construction of one variety of literature of crime is examined considering two aspects: its relationship with an international literary phenomena of the nineteenth century, and its relationship with the press, which continued to be a close one.
