Abstract

The central theme of this dissertation is the notion Conjunctio oppositorum, a term used by Jerzy Grotowski to express the paradoxical intertwining between `structure¿ and `spontaneity¿ in the performing work. The dissertation is divided into three parts. Part I, called Conjunctio oppositorum, is a historical analysis and bibliographic review of the subject. Part II, the Paratheatre, is an analysis of the projects undertaken between 1970 and 1982 by the Laboratory Theatre ¿ Polish group directed by Jerzy Grotowski. Part III, entitled Conjunctio oppositorum in the Paratheatre, parts I and II are linked through the analysis of the paradox structure- spontaneity in the parathetrical projects.
