Abstract

Due to the convenience of using lasers in optical communications systems based on coherent reception techniques, the understanding of the optical carrier properties are of interest for designing and evaluation of optical links quality. We describe a method for narrow linewidth laser evaluation using a technique based on the beating after photoreception of two optical carriers, one from a local oscillator laser and the other from a laser to be characterized, followed by analog to digital ultrafast acquisition and offline digital processing. Algorithms were developed for evaluation of the phase and frequency deviations of electromagnetic carrier. The results provide a thoughtful insight at the loss of coherence events, including an estimative of the laser linewidth and phase noise. However, to obtain the individual contribution of each laser (signal and local oscillator), it is necessary to employ two identical photoreceivers (AU)
