Abstract

This doctoral thesis focuses on the techniques, procedures, and political and institutional threads that make up the Institute of Legal Medicine (Instituto Médico Legal - IML) in its function as a branch of the police department that conducts forensic science. In the process of examining such mechanisms, I attempt, on the one hand, to overcome the difficulties imposed on my research, and, on the other, to expose occasionally intricate relations that connect this department to a wide range of agencies that, together, constitute the state: police departments, universities, public agencies etc. Therefore, I try to understand Campinas¿ IML as an empirical circumscription, with borders that were mobile and built during the process of my research. In this sense, the denial of my requisition to access the IML, sent to IML¿s Scientific Commission in São Paulo, stablishes the foundation that organizes the thesis. From the "counters" and "checkpoints" imposed on my research, a medley of fragments emerges: techniques for documenting the documents, legal-medicine classes, canonical texts in the discipline, forensics reports, necropsy techniques, in addition to careers, vanities and institutional conflicts. Through the use of juxtapositions, the material evidences found on the victim¿s bodies of the crimes of rape and sexual assault, accessed during my master's research, give light to the political, mediatic and institutional threads that entangle affairs and forensic experts. While the idea of pieces embodies certain women¿s "sex" by means of hymns, fissures, and forensic uncertainties, the above-mentioned threads requalify the standardized and bureaucratic characteristic of this police department. It is also in this productive intersection that a very specific type of technical-scientific authority is forged and, simultaneously, continually put at risk by means of material evidences, bodies, pieces, and traces (AU)
