Abstract

This dissertation investigates and systematizes the Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) housing production dynamics, under a qualitative analysis with a literature search focus, towards understanding sustainability gains and losses. Although several researchers have recognized the benefits of timber construction, the sustainability analysis requires holistic approaches that consider its multifaceted nature. To this end, an analysis tool that mapped and investigated the housing life cycle processes, with CLT as the protagonist, enabled the development of questions and pointers that emerge beyond the themes of structure and design. The study proposes a clear and objective diagnostic method for translating sustainability principles incorporated in Low Carbon Building Technologies. It has also provided a global perspective on CLT applied nationally and examined under bias. Overall, it presents the CLTs potentialities and frailties, outlining the links between sustainability dimensions that determine a sustainable context. (AU)
