Abstract

This dissertation comprises three stand-alone chapters on elections and economic voting in comparative politics. The first chapter offers an answer to the question of whether partisan dealignment drive changes in the incumbency advantage in U.S. House elections over time. The second chapter employs a comparative research design to evaluate the gender gap on presidential approval ratings during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil and the U.S. A final chapter focuses on how research designs that use polychotomous dependent variables can be improved with more robust post-estimation analyses. In sum, the findings of the research produced in this dissertation provide substantive and methodological contributions to distinct lines of inquiry. (AU)
