Abstract

The objective of this work is to analyze the dramaturgical procedures of representation of the American South in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955), by American playwright Tennessee Williams. This play, a recipient of the 1955 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and one of Williams\'s most famous works, dramatizes the conflicted relationship between Maggie and her husband Brick, members of the Southern agrarian elite, over the course of one evening\'s gathering to celebrate the birthday of patriarch Big Daddy, at the family estate in Mississippi. Starting from a critical investigation of the history of the United States, with special emphasis on the history of the South, this dissertation seeks to highlight the main aspects of the formation of the American nation, its cultural values, and its social practices. Then, it analyzes the dramaturgical procedures of Williams\' play and demonstrates that the characters\' conflicts and the plot of the play are closely associated with the economic structures of the Mississippi plantation, where the action is set. Drawing from an analysis of the short story that inspired the play, \"Three Players of a Summer Game\" (1952), also by Williams, this work identified the differences and similarities between both works. Finally, through the formal analysis of the play, it indicates how the symbology of the summer game is used to attribute historical meaning to the plot, mostly in relation to the political and economic tensions that are specific to the American South.
