Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to present the results of the PhD research entitled Family Life in the Enslaved and Freed Population of the province of Popayán (Colombia), 1780-1852. The research aims to analyze how the enslaved and freed population of the haciendas of the province of Popayán in New Granada (Colombia), established their couple relationships, family and kinship forms in societies structured on social, racial and gender hierarchies between 1780 and 1852. For this purpose, we focused on groups of enslaved people belonging to one of the most prestigious families in the city of Popayán, the Arboleda family. Trying to follow these groups of enslaved people through time, we cross-checked several sources such as: inventories, deeds of slave sales, manumissions, criminal trials, parish archives and population censuses, to understand the formation of their couple relationships; the characteristics of the various family or kinship forms and their stability; the formation of their identities based on dominant values about the family; the importance of the slave family as a survival strategy for obtaining freedom and resistance to slavery; and the role of enslaved and freed women in the formation of families and kinship networks (AU)
