Abstract

Ecological awareness and economic motivations have led to the global deployment of clean and renewable distributed energy resources, such as photovoltaic (PV) generation, and electric vehicles. However, to achieve high integration levels of these technologies, which introduce more uncertainties and variability, it is essential to maintain Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related databases of power distribution utilities updated, as the accuracy of operation and planning studies rely on these data. This task can be achieved by implementing new applications into the Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) using raw data provided by smart electricity meters. In the context of adopting these technologies, generically called grid-edge technologies, the objective of this doctoral thesis is to develop new methods to identify and correct typical errors existent in the GIS and related databases of distribution utilities using smart meter measurements. The proposed methods are validated by using real distribution systems considering the massive presence of grid-edge technologies, especially smart meters and PV generators. Three methods are developed: (1) the first method estimates the topology of low voltage (LV) systems, the LV line parameters, and the customers and lines phase connection; (2) the second method estimates the status of switches installed in medium voltage (MV) systems and the tap position of distribution transformers (i.e., MV/LV transformers); and (3) the third method estimates the physical status and control settings of capacitor banks and voltage regulators. The errors tackled by the proposed methods are typical errors found in real GIS databases from utilities worldwide. Therefore, the proposed methods and concepts have the potential to be integrated into any GIS employed by distribution utilities (AU)
