Abstract

This thesis has as main objective to analyzing the multiple ways in which the past is placed in the present in the quilombola communities of Macuco, Pinheiro, Gravatá and Mata Dois, located in the rural area of the municipality of Minas Novas, Jequitinhonha Valley-MG. Starting from an ethnographic perspective, it seeks to understand how kinship, politics, domesticity, territory and religiosity are lived from shared memories, fundamental to the present and future projections. Thus, the local concept of rasto will be used to reach different dimensions of the search for the past as a guide for everyday life and reflections on time. In general, the constructing people processes will be valued, especially inside their homes; that is fundamental for the consolidation of their collective views. These processes will also indicate the centrality of motherhood in the local kinship system and its consequences for the understanding of varied political and social situations, especially with regard to the fact that the municipality is understood as \"Mother City\" or \"Mother of the Jequitinhonha Valley\". In parallel, the Feast of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos will be presented, which combines local memories with the official history of the bicentennial celebration, fundamental for the municipality and for the dissemination of Afro-Brazilian religiosities promoted by the Irmandade do Rosário. Therefore, the temporal relationships these four communities establish with the past will be analyzed in different contexts and intentions. (AU)
