Abstract

The goal of this dissertation is to deepen the knowledge about the subordinations of the Yaathe language (Yathe Family, MACRO-JÊ stock), spoken by the Fulni-ô. For that, we elaborate a description of its restrictive relative clauses and relative elements. In addition, at the end we propose a syntactic analysis for this type of construction. We use the typological work and the Analysis of Antisymmetric Promotion by De Vries (200), Baker's (2011) proposal for nominalized embedded clauses of Sakha and the proposal by Vivanco (2018) and Vivanco (2022, in press) for the relative clauses of Karitiana (Tupi). The methodology consisted of linguistic elicitation guided by an experimental context, inspired by Vivanco (2014), as well as the application of questionnaires to test the acceptability of certain sequences. Yaathe has two nominalizing relative affixes, -ho and -doa. -ho is not allowed in object and intransitive subject relative clauses, revealing an ergative alignment in subordinations. The language also has resumptive pronouns, tade and take, which occur only in relative indirect object clauses. We noticed that, similarly to Karitiana, yaathe presents internally-headed relative clauses, which is optionally raised. Furthermore, in descriptive terms, their relative clauses reveal a mixed behavior between clause and noun, that is, they have both clause and noun phrase properties. The yaathe also resembles the karitiana in this last respect. The mixed behavior of relatives is captured by Baker's (2011) proposal, according to which sentences incorporated with nominal characteristics can be understood as a compilation of functional heads, including a nominalizer. Such heads would be: v, Voice, I, Asp and n. We based our analysis on Vivanco (2022, in press). Yaathe differs from karitiana in some aspects: it does not have an Evid core. Once the clause undergoes nominalization, the relative clause head will not be raised to the outside, staying in Spec;AspP when moved. Although this work assumes the Antisymmetric Promotion Analysis, it differs in this point from De Vries (2002) in its proposal: the head does not go to Spec;CP, a projection that yaathe relative clauses do not have (AU)
