Abstract

The distinctive and fundamental libraries’ properties are changed over time, so these institutions are influenced by the needs and particularities of their communities, which also are transformed. Some of these changes reflected in the nomenclature used to refer to the characteristics of the libraries. This is the case of the traditional and hybrid libraries. The society cannot work with a concept adapted to the particularities of a specific community, of it does not focus on the communities’ specificities. In the same way, an institution may not be fully understood if it is not updated to integrate the society. This research defends the thesis that hybridity paradigm for libraries stagnated in the 1990s, however, the library management changed, because of their communities’ needs. From this perspective, this study aimed to propose a hybrid library concept based on the discursive analysis of the integration of complexity, knowledge, innovation, and socio-cultural trajectory of communities. That is, based on the discursive analysis of the existence of a social contribution that integrates the complexity, knowledge and innovation in the interaction with the society. It sought to discuss the involvement of the technologies in libraries, as well as their community development. The study is qualitative, exploratory, and carried out a theoreticalepistemological and field research. It used the Multimodal Discourse Analysis as research method. The Bibliographic Research was used as a tool to collect data in specific and related Information Science databases. The Field Research was used as a tool to collect data in hybrid library environments placed in the State of Missouri and Kansas, United States of America. As results was possible to identify that hybridity should be understood beyond its physical infrastructure, as a representative factor to develop communities. The hybridity promotes ways to use technology in favor of a collective intelligence, approaching knowledge networks, which can bring new perspectives to the libraries. Among its constitutive elements, the availability of largescale resources, printed and digital information, integrated information services, interaction between people and technology, as well as the impact of these libraries on the public management, such as human, social, economic, cultural, and sustainable development are highlighted. Thus, to speak of hybridity means to refer to a model of management for libraries, which can be applied to its most varied types. (AU)
