Abstract

This dissertation proposes the analysis of the phenomenon of socio-spatial segregation in favelas, based on the relationship between housing precariousness and the sociodemographic characteristics of the residents. To this end, it starts with the recognition of the heterogeneity of the favelas, whose differences must be understood not only from the territorial and sociodemographic point of view, but also from their historical process and their internal dynamics. Detailed analyzes of the internal areas of the favelas make it possible to observe the great socioeconomic diversity of the residents, as well as allowing the identification of intra-favela regions with higher concentrations of precarious housing and with greater socio-spatial needs. Therefore, it starts from the understanding that even within the favelas there are inequalities realized in the internal space, so levels of socio-spatial segregation within the favelas can be verified. By relating the sociodemographic profile of the residents with the precariousness of their homes, we sought to observe whether there is a sociodemographic pattern in the profile of those responsible for the most precarious homes, allowing for deeper discussions on intrafavelas segregation. In this context, when analyzing the sociodemographic profile of the residents, the central question arises that the most precarious households are related to historically more vulnerable social groups, internally reproducing in popular housing areas what is already observed at the city scale. The methodology of this dissertation is based on a quantitative approach, having as case studies from an exploratory bias the Favelas Vila Nova Esperança, Pedra Branca, Verdinhas and Capadócia, located mainly on the outskirts of the city of São Paulo. Based on the data provided by the organization TETO Brasil, for the years 2018 and 2019, the housing conditions of the studied favelas were characterized, as well as the profile of the resident population. To investigate housing precariousness, housing conditions are analyzed using an indicator of housing precariousness, highlighting the complexity of factors related to housing in slum spaces. It was found that the regions with the highest concentrations of precarious housing, in the four favelas analyzed, also correspond to the places with the most difficult access or with risks arising from the location, such as areas on slopes or on the banks of rivers and streams. Furthermore, the results of the analysis of association between the sociodemographic characteristics of the residents and the housing precariousness of the households indicated that there is a relationship between precariousness and socioeconomic aspects. Thus, the pattern of socioeconomic segregation seen at the city scale, in which lower-income groups occupy less valued and more vulnerable areas, seems to be reproduced at the favela scale. (AU)
