Abstract

The present master's work was part of a collective effort of the team of researchers of the Center for Studies of Teaching, Work, Environment and Health (CEETAS) of UNESP of Presidente Prudente to understand the systemic degradation of work and the impact on the health of workers and the environment resulting from the expansion of sugarcane agro-hydrobusiness in Pontal do Paranapanema (SP). As a result of the expansion and consolidation of agro-hydrobusiness capital in this region, countless peasant families living in agrarian reform settlements suffer from the direct impact of sugarcane cultivation. Spraying, besides hitting the target (plants and pests), also affects the air/soil/water, wild and domestic animals, human beings, and the surrounding vegetation. The work arose from the need to understand this destructive process from the school units located in these rural settlements, since these are schools that emerged from the very struggle for land, especially coordinated by the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST). We also intended to evaluate the empowerment of the local population in the search for alternatives that promote and value life. Thus, the work will discuss the problem of pesticide exposure from the perspective of health promotion in these settlement schools. That is why the present research is related to a concept of participatory surveillance, involving students and other members of the school communities in the creation of an environmental health observatory integrated with the real demands of a sustainable healthy territory.
