Abstract

This research aims to investigate the socioeconomic and kinship profiles of parliamentarians elected for the 2015-2019 Legislature from the 26 Legislative Assemblies and the Federal District Legislative Chamber, with an emphasis on female deputies, in order to outline the access of singular profiles to these elective offices and observing possible constraints to achieve greater gender parity among the elected. Centrally, it seeks to demonstrate that the types of political capital identified in parliamentarians can be understood in four main dimensions: (1) institutional capital - political trajectory formed within political parties or through the exercise of previous elective mandates; (2) family capital - kinship with other politicians; (3) economic capital - high concentration of patrimony; and (4) media capital - link with the media and/or ownership of radio and television concessions. From this configuration, it is implied that the low effectiveness of the legal measures formulated to promote the increase of gender parity in the decision-making spaces of national policy - the law of party quotas for female candidates - could be related to the unique profiles capable of succeeding in the electoral competitions. The analysis of the data will then make it possible to verify whether the male gender would tend to present the types of political capital in a plural way, as opposed to the profile of the female gender, which would be more dependent on family capital, constraining the objective of increasing gender parity in the sphere of representative politics (AU)
