Abstract

This research examines the volumes XXXIV, XXXV e XXXVI of the Natural History by Pliny the Elder from the perspective of the stories about the arts. Therefore we present a translation of those volumes and a glossary of terms that indicate the name of the artistic pieces and works, procedures, techniques and impressions related to them. A catalogue of artists mentioned by Pliny and the identification of the criteria for this selection was also made. Some common characteristics between the books such as common topics and procedures of argumentation and style were analysed, especially the presence of anecdotes, about which we comment on matters of functionality, structure and sources.
