Abstract

The purpose of this study was to know about the perception of elderly people body image, after participation in a Physical Educational Program. Defined as the body representation in our mind, the body image is building in the interrelation of the person with the environment, with the culture and the others people. Then, the collective representations are organized and compose the body image, possibly being constantly rebuilt. The link of this concept with theoretical evidences, which prove the importance of physical activity in promotion and/or enlargement of the body knowledge, has configured the presupposed that physical exercise, in group, probably causes body image interferences of the participants. Seventeen people were recruited, both sex and 65,1 of average age, of a Physical Educational Program, developed in the Physical Education course of the University of São Paulo. The data were based on semi-structured interviews, supported for draws collected in three moments of the Program. The Collective Subject Discourse was chosen as the methodological procedure, in order to make emerge the collective thinking about the efficiency of physical education in the body image recreation. The results indicate that: (1) the physical activity modify positively the elderly people body image; (2) the elderly people change their perceptions\' aging; (3) the social representations about the elderly people body are positive modified (AU)
