Abstract

The main objective of this research was to carry out a theoretical test on how to explore the variability of lithic industries in the interior of São Paulo. For that, two different theoretical premises were used as a parameter. The first understands that the artifact variability could be the result of an extra-somatic adaptation, strongly influenced by the environment, known as Processualism. A second approach assumes that human behavior is highly standardized and the variability attested by the archaeological record would be a consequence of different cultural groups occupying the same or different territories, this notion is called as Cultural Transmission. In order to evaluate the two approaches through the artifacts, first a Georeferenced Database was developed, based on the bibliographic survey of academic publications and CRM reports, from which some collections were selected for analysis. Once the database was considered finished, the information was classified by type of artifact: retouched flakes, points, elongated unifacials and, points with elongated unifacials in the same assemblage. This data was explored using the Geographic Information System, where it was possible to observe the location of each type of artifact in it respective biome. The final results suggest a low relationship between types of artifacts with specific environments. As a consequence, it was also possible to point out possible distinct cultural groups, suggesting hypotheses for future research (AU)
