Abstract | |
This research project investigates the vortex-induced vibration in groups of flexible cylinders, named \"risers\", which are used in the offshore industry. In order to achieve this, the fluid flow is evaluated in a \"quasi three-dimensional\" fashion. A finite element structural model is employed and the flow is simulated through two-dimensional strips. The hydrodynamic model used to simulate the fluid flows, at high Reynolds number, is the Discrete Vortex Method in its Lagrangian form. It is presented, besides the results of group of risers - some of them a novelty until this study -, results of the many steps that were necessary to achieve our research objective: the study of two-dimensional flow with the cylinder free to oscillate and with groups of cylinders. A comparison of the results obtained with the \"quasi-three-dimensional\" model with the experimental results of a cantilever model, a beam fixed on the top end and free at the bottom end, receives a special attention. It is expected that this work has yielded the first step towards the direct utilization of Computational Fluids Dynamics as an applied research tool, giving results of practical interests to problems of the offshore industry.
