Abstract

The expansion of the urbanized area of São Paulo was primarily a result of private initiative, which promoted several modifications in the urban space during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Transforming the city into a business was a practice among urban dwellers, creating an environment where property became profitable. In this period, São Paulo city underwent a process of demographic change and became a pole of reception of immigrants, who impacted economically, socially and culturally. Among the colonies, the Syrian-Lebanese were consolidated in urban environments and let several marks in the city. Therefore, this research aims to study the biographies of some immigrants in the community between 1887 and 1928, privileging the microhistory in dialogue with the macroscopic processes. The individuals under consideration are Benjamin Jafet, Nami Jafet, Basílio Jafet, and Rizkallah Jorge Tahan. Examining their roles allows us to understand how they contributed to the urbanization of São Paulo and how their choices were influenced by the prevailing context. The commercial, industrial, and social networks they developed along with their properties hold numerous meanings that enable us to comprehend their integration into São Paulo. This analysis seeks to interconnect the social and material spaces to verify how the city and individuals construct a relationship of circularity (AU)
