Abstract

The importance of the Brazilian pre-salt carbonates has been greatly emphasized in the last decades. These lacustrine reservoirs present heterogeneous and complex characteristics, hindering the understanding of its sedimentary and tectonic evolution. Although several studies have been presented concerning these deposits, there is currently no consensus for a depositional model that represents all the singularities of these reservoirs. Electrofacies definition has been commonly used for reservoir studies and the use of computational aid to deal with complex datasets has become popular among geoscientists. The electrofacies facilitate the reservoir zoning process which, added to the lithological characterization, yields information about the depositional environment. Although presenting high vertical resolution, the well log data does not enable the analysis of the lateral distribution of the facies. Integration with seismic data allows the extrapolation of the well log information to the areas between wells, helping in the characterization of the reservoir zones and the understanding of the depositional environment. Aiming to contribute to the characterization of the Brazilian presalt reservoirs, this work proposes the application of unsupervised artificial neural networks through the Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) method, based on conventional well logs, to assist in the electrofacies definition and zoning of a pre-salt reservoir in the Barra Velha Formation (BVF) of Santos Basin and the interpretation of seismic data to aid in the characterization of the defined zones and the paleoenvironment analysis. Based on the interpreted data, a depositional model was proposed, also indicating sin and post-depositional faulting influencing on the configuration of the reservoir depositional environment and the deposited sediments. Furthermore, specific regions in the study area indicate structural changes during the reservoir deposition, which may locally affect the reservoir quality (AU)
