Abstract

This work presents a three-dimensional geometrically exact rod model, which accommodates large displacements as well as large rotations, and accounts for non-uniform torsion-warping deformation. Linear and nonlinear elastic constitutive equations are considered. Alternative parameters for large rotation in three dimensions are proposed, resulting in simple expressions which are more efficient than the classical Euler-Rodrigues parametrization in numerical applications. The models presented were coded in a nonlinear space-frame finite element program, and many examples are analysed to confirm the validity of the theories. (AU)
