Abstract

Little knows about the impact of breastfeeding cessation and post-partum weight retention. Objective. The aim of this study was to verify the weight change on post-partum period and its relationship with the type and duration of breastfeeding. Methods. It was carried out a cohort study with 67 women. They were followed on third, sixth and twelfth post-partum month. It was verified: breastfeeding type and duration, mother\'s age, marriage, parity, gestational weight gain, pre-gestational weight, years of study, job, race and gains. Multiple regression had analyzed the relationship between that variable, post-partum weight retention and the two types of breastfeeding: exclusive and not exclusive. That variables were analyzed one by one and, together, adjusted to variables that presented significance level minor than 0.05%. Results. Exclusive breastfeeding and not exclusive breastfeeding didn\'t show statistic significance with regard to post-partum weight change. Gestational weight gain had statistic significance on the third and sixth postpartum month; and the energy intake, on the twelfth month. Conclusions. Breastfeeding type and duration didn\'t show association with post-partum weight retention. (AU)
