Abstract

In this work it is performed a study of the spread of HIV-infection in heterogeneous male homossexual populations, analyzing a compartimental model. First, it is discussed some aspects of AIDS epidemic, as history, biological issues and transmission mechanics, and it is shown a general Picture of the epidemic in Brazil. Then, compartimental models for the HIV transmission are reviewed and it is proposed a general compartimental model for the AIDS epidemic. Also it is shown how the reviewed models are particular cases of the general model. A model for the transmission of HIV-infection in male homossexual population is formulated, incorporating behavioral diferences in transmission preventive measures. Simplified effects of social networks are considered. Finally, through equilibrium and stability calculations and simulations, considering the model capacities and limitions, especulations concerning the future trends of AIDS epidemic in Brazil are made.
