Abstract

The increasing importance of natural gas as fuel in industrial processes, household services and transportation means makes the prodedures for production, transport and marketing of such hydrocarbon a matter of crescent relevancy. In all these activities, accurate volume or flow measurement is not only a technical, economical and environmental guarantee, but also something necessary. In this work a flow measurement system for natural gas (flow computer) is developed, to be mainly applied in custody transfer measurement stations where huge amounts of gas hydrocarbon are manipulated. The system includes a personal computer and several measurement points. Foundation Fieldbus compatible instrumentation is used and the primary devices employed are orifice plates. The software developed allows the continuous computing of the orifice plate discharge coefficient as well as the compressibility factor of the gaseous mixture. This project represents a new approach to the flow computer design, with an open architecture and as a simple and flexible tool for gas flow measurement in the chemical and petrochemical industry.
