Abstract

This work presents a new approach to the problem of the steady flow of a electrical conducting fluid in the presence of a magnetic field. The method is based on the application of the Finite Element Method to the swolution of the system of magnetohydrodynamic equations and its mos important feature is the introduction of a Penalty Function, as a way to improve the convergence properties of the associated algebraic system of non-linear equations. The Galerkin weak formulation is defined for the system of partial differential equations governing the magnetohydrodynamic flow, and the full solution is obtained in three dimensions. Computer simulations show that the proposed method can be applied to situations in which the Hartmann Number and the Interaction Parameter are both of the order of 103. These values are greater than those reached by other numerical techniques. (AU)
