Abstract

Largely accepted by consumers, adhered veneers with dimension stones are commonly used on interior and exterior building sites. Nonetheless, among the various pathologies that they can show are staining and efflorescence, that impacts the aesthetic appeal, and cracks and distachments, that interfere on both the veneer architecture and its functionality and safety. The present work, based on bibliography, interviews, visits on building sites and laboratory researches that studied the adherence resistance and visual alteration - changing setting mortar, cement, water repellent, grout mortar and stone - have proved that these problems may result from any steps of the veneer production process: extraction, sawn, polishing, transportation, design, setting, use and maintenance. The causes can be found in the mortar used for setting and grouting the tiles, workmanship, water repellent products, cleaning procedures and products. The evidences lead to the conclusion that for a dimension stone veneer show a reliable performance it is necessary to take all of these parameters into account upon designing to ensure an adequate, compatible and rational work.
