Abstract

The allostratigraphic unit known as the Rio Ivaí Group of the Paraná Basin is made up of the Alto Garças, Iapó and Vila Maria formations which, together, date back to the Ordovician-Silurian. The Rio Ivaí Group was formally proposed in the 1990s, but the history of studies of its units dates back to the 1940s, comprising work with different geological and paleontological approaches. In this research, we sought to rescue the main contributions to the knowledge of the Ordovician-Silurian formations of the Brazilian Paraná Basin, with the aim of detailing the information, knowledge and paradigms proposed over the decades, especially with regard to paleontological knowledge. Based on new studies conducted in classic outcrops of the Rio Ivaí Group, located on the northern edge of the Paraná Basin, this work also revisits the fossil biodiversity reported for the Ordovician-Silurian of the basin and reports the occurrence of new fossil groups. The group of brachiopods receives special attention due to their biostratigraphic potential. On a global scale, brachiopods constitute one of the fossil groups of great biostratigraphic relevance for determining the Hirnantian. In the Paraná Basin, however, this interval is not well established and requires more detailed studies. The occurrence of different groups of brachiopods has already been reported for the Iapó (Upper Ordovician) and Vila Maria (Lower Silurian) formations. This project also aims to investigate the brachiopod fauna of these formations through taxonomic and taphonomic analyses. The study of these organisms, in addition to elucidating questions about the diversity of fossil invertebrates from the Lower Paleozoic of the Paraná Basin, can also provide evidence for the establishment of the Hirnantian of the Basin, enabling the comparative analysis of these strata with those of Hirnantian age in other regions of the world. The project stages involved taphonomic collection of material and direct analysis of individuals. The samples were studied through observation with a stereoscopic microscope and techniques such as scanning electron microscopy. With this work, we hope to contribute to the characterization of the global Hirnantian brachiopod fauna, as well as to value and project efforts of Brazilian paleontology (AU)
