Abstract

Above all, Paris is remembered for being the raptor of the most beautiful woman of the world, Helen, with certain highlight on his judgement, when he decided which goddess – Hera, Athena or Aphrodite – should win the beauty contest. However, the surviving poetic texts do not exhaust his representation in this infraction, and sometimes it is even multiple and contradictory in the same composition: he can escape from a duel and from war, but also kill the enemy\'s greater warrior alongside Apollo; sometimes seen as a target of god\'s will, others as a catalyst of misfortune. Therefore, this project aims to study the character in three elevated poetic genres from the archaic (VII-V B.C.) and classical (V-IV B.C.) periods: epic, melic and tragedy. Through exploring Paris in different poets and compositions, it will be possible to trace his characterization in the course of time, space and poetic making, focusing not only on his erotic aspects, but also his athletic and rhetorical virtues, as exemplified in Euripides\' Alexandros, or his battle prowess, as in Achilles\' death tradition (AU)
