Abstract

This dissertation has the aim of contributing to the discussion regarding the urban renovations that took place in Rio de Janeiro during the turn of the twentieth century. To this end, it investigates the impact of the renovations on the lives of workers who lived in Inhaúma, a suburban district of Rio de Janeiro. Through the analysis of a variety of sources, it identifies how the aforementioned district underwent major changes during this period, in particular the growth in the number of buildings as well as in population. This study also presents data related to the lives of those workers and the problems they encountered by living in that region. Moreover, it explores the relations that were established between those historical subjects and the civil servants, based on the reading of appeals sent to the mayor contesting fines, which were received for infractions. Finally, this dissertation also deals with the conflicts between the suburbanites and the police, through the investigation of criminal lawsuits for battery and vagrancy (AU)
