Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze and understand the teaching and learning methods of statistics in Mathematics classes for students in the 7th grade in an elementary school of "Adult Education" and also to analyze the role of production of knowledge in the incorporation of students in literacy activities. The fieldwork of this participative research was set in a public school in the countryside of the state of São Paulo, where I developed a project called "Building Statistics", which was aided in a collaborative manner by two research assistant trainees. The analysis material consists of transcripts of audio and video recordings of classroom activities, portfolios of students productions, and of the daily notes the trainees and I did. Through the process of analyzing the material, three axis of analysis emerged: a) The relationship of students with Mathematics. b) The production of knowledge in Statistics for students at the meetings regarding the project. c) The incorporation of students in literacy activities. Although I was aware of the "reading and writing" difficulties, and the unfavorable situation for the development of these capacities in the school environment, I did not find these difficulties to be overwhelming obstacles: I did my best to make the students participate in the literacy activities. Both by answering their questions, giving them the chance to speak and then transforming their "voices" into written words, as well as letting them believe that their words could be converted into an academic paper. It is possible to say that this knowledge production was beyond the knowledge of Statistics and Mathematics. In addition the students interacted with the school community, with the researcher, with the trainees and with their colleagues, to be a part of the founding of their knowledge, and it was very important for us and probably for them.
