Abstract

The objective of this research was to observe, investigate and analyse the associative diversity in three districts in the extreme east of the city of São Paulo - despite the different development experiences, they share the reality of high social deprivation - with the purpose of discussing the possibilities e limitations of building a democratic society based on the daily experiences lived by women community leaders in the district voluntary associations. With this in mind, the option for a social anthropologic approach was made, based on the individual and family trajectories of life. This approach will allow the problematization of such experiences - by the articulation of private space and public space - in a way that the experience of life can be considered for the understanding of the social processes that are outlined at the present time.
