Abstract

This research had aims to make the "Modinhas of Good Taste Collection" (1830) by João F. Leal accessible for the public through a historicalaesthetic-musical study; provide a new edition of the original music scores with suggestions on how to set the non-set lyrics to the music; perform the collection in a recital form; and present suggestions of ornamentation as a result of the song's poetical and musical study. For these objectives we consulted specialized bibliography and primary resources, like the referred collection 1830's edition, periodicals, certificates, reports, inventories, academic records, among others. Analysis of the information allowed us to place in context the collection in an environment near the first half of the nineteenth century court in Rio de Janeiro. We also studied the collection's authorship and the life of the composer, since until now this matter has been less discussed. The well known influence of Italian opera on this genre of songs became evident in this research, especially Rossini's influence in the case of these modinhas. This study also provided us with data that permitted us to identify an adequate aesthetic vocal ideal for the interpretation of the songs, that curiously seems to be reminiscent of the castrati Italian school, while the part of the accompaniment refers more to Classicism. This information led us to understand that the musical practice of that period was still associated with the baroque and classical vocal tastes, despite the popularity of rossinian opera in Rio de Janeiro. The preparation of the new edition, as well as the ornamentation for the different stanzas provided important data related to the prosodic setting of this genre. We believe that prosodic characteristic of the modinhas used by several Brazilian composers, from different time periods, can be in fact a typical quality of the genre that challenges the performer and privileges the audience.
