Abstract

This work consists in the study of the activities of artist and scenographer Flávio Império in the field of architecture and arts and architecture teaching, in which his contribution to Brazilian architecture and arts historiography was unsurpassed during the 60´s, 70´s and 80´s. Both his individually conceived architectonic works and his works developed as the result of a partnership with Sérgio Ferro e Rodrigo Lefèvre, his friends, teaching and working colleagues, mainly during the sixties decade, have been analyzed. It has also been analyzed Imperio´s work as a teacher, in an attempt to identify aspects of his specific role in the education of future architects, and the nature of his teaching methods, related to his experience in other fields, as Theatre. This dissertation includes the study of Flavio Império´s architectonic works; the relation between him and other architects who were models to him, and with whom he worked several times; the study of his work as a Visual Languages teacher; the relation between his artistic, scenographic and architectonic production and his academic activities. The main objective of these studies was to make a comparative analysis of the language he used in the production of sceneries and costumes (for theater), his paintings, serigraphies and gravures (plastic arts), and his works in architecture and architecture teaching. This aims to show how his activities as architect and teacher have always been connected to his experiences in acting workshops, which he attended during his theater activities in Arena and Oficina groups, to his experiments with Brechtian epic theatre (in the 60´s) and to his work in Centro de Estudos Macunaíma (in the 70´s), among others. This work was developed first by a research which tries to complement the documental basis of the architectonic projects in which he took part. Collection of data related to his classes in FAU-USP (Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de São Paulo) and other schools has also been made, along with interviews with many of his former students and teaching and working colleagues.
