Abstract

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that causes a great impact on patient\'s life, harming their social adjustment and quality of life. It is known that, although the atypical antipsychotics such as clozapine, contribute to the improvement of cognitive functions and the socializing of the person, the use of strategies that combine medication and psychosocial treatment, increases the chance of recovery and optimizes the results. According to this perspective, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of a group of activities (Occupational Therapy) on the quality of life and social adjustment of patients with refractory schizophrenia, treated with clozapine in treatment, and to investigate the participants\' perceptions on the positives and negatives points of the group meetings. This is an evaluation survey that was conducted at the group of patients using atypical antipsychotics in a Psychosocial Rehabilitation Clinic. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee and eight members who participated of this group were patients on treatment with atypical antipsychotic medication for a Psychosocial Rehabilitation Clinic who met the inclusion criteria, and a relative of each patient. For data collection we used the techniques of group, semi-structured interviews and participant observation. 20 group meetings were conducted in a group with closed structure. To evaluate the impact of the activities group on quality of life and social adjustment of the patient were applied (individually) before and after the 20 group meetings, the Scale for Assessment of Quality of Life for patients and Inventory of Skills for Independent Living for the family. To identify the participants\' perceptions about the group process was used to semi-structured interviews. For data analysis was proposed Fisher\'s exact test to establish whether an association exists between the questions of the questionnaires, Scale for Assessment of Quality of Life, Inventory of Independent Living Skills and time (Before and After). The test was conducted with the aid of the SAS ® 9.0 software, using PROC FREQ.A comparative analysis of collected data is being performed before and after the completion of the group meetings. The findings of this study are related to the population and sample studied, and the chosen context, noting that the group activity provided the patients the disruption of social isolation, facilitated by the activities and learned throughout the course group, recovering the meaning of the relations social skills and remaining capacity are not encouraged. This study thus enables a leap in the implementation of intervention strategies in health services directed at the quality of care for people with schizophrenia. (AU)
