Abstract

Introduction: Family Health Strategy is a possibility of following people with mental health suffering integrated to the health network which is able to facilitate, throughout user embracement, intersection actions of social inclusion. However, little is known about the Family Health Strategy teams interventions related to mental health problems. This study aimed to verify if these workers can observe mental health problems and if they follow these problems. In case the teams are effectively dealing with mental health issues, it is proposed to describe the procedures and existing orientations to do these actions. These descriptions might permit to establish if ESFs teams do or do not do an integrated intervention with mental health teams belonging to the formal assistance network. Objective: describe the intervention procedures of people with mental health problems by Family Health Teams. Method: Data from the quali-quantitative cross-sectional study named Epidemiologic and Social demographic characteristics of patients of the CAPSi from São Paulo state have been used. Data were collected in five cities from the State of São Paulo three metropolitan cities and two from the countryside. 823 workers were defined as the research subjects, but 729 professional from Family Health Strategy from these cities were considered in this study. A mixed questionnaire containing 56 questions was applied in the subjects. Data has been adjusted proportionally to each professional category. Results: the subjects observe mental health problems in the population assisted and follow them with mental health interventions. The orientations received to do so take place especially in team meetings. The most mentioned procedure used to follow these people is discussion of cases with the teams. Considering the relationship between different teams and services it is possible to infer that fragmentation of care is present as well as hierarchical relations. Conclusion: Professionals from Family Health Strategy, focused on general health attention of people in primary care, observe and follow people with mental health problems. Their procedures, concerning mental health reveal, however, issues probably connected with the movements presented in the early history of mental health and with the low and not continuous investments in this area according to the comprehension of health politics inserted in the context of Psychiatric Reform. Nevertheless, Family Health Strategy model, because of its potential in the middle of the population, can be considered a great promise in order to re-direct mental health problems interventions according to peoples demand (AU)
