Abstract

The present work deals with some of the students\' difficulties at a Physics teaching laboratory. Using experiment reports written by students in a laboratory course at the Physics Institute of USP we analyzed the understanding of typical concepts in a physics experiment like measurement, uncertainty, fluctuations etc. A qualitative analysis of the reports content shows that measurements are very often represented incorrectly and when they are correct, the interpretation is wrong; the observer and measurement instrument influences surpass and conceal the intrinsic properties of a physical measurement. For interpretation of the results we used reality concepts that have been presented by authors in the area of Sociology; we based on the assumption that students\' everyday life reality is different from the reality as seen from a scientific perspective. We tried to connect the difficulties found by students when they have to measure, express and analyze results of a laboratory measurement, to their everyday life conceptions. We consider that the difficulties found by students\' in their Physics teaching laboratory have a strong component of a misleading conception, of common sense, in relation to certain aspects of the scientific field, rather than an ignorance of statistical procedures that are used in the elaboration of results.
