Abstract

Plants are influenced by a large number of biotic and abiotic environmental factors, recurrent abiotic stresses being the most serious and affecting all plant functions, leading to reduced growth and productivity. In this context, identifying and understanding abiotic resistance mechanisms are crucial for developing new drought-resistant cultivars. Thus, the present invention describes a method for producing plants with cells that contain a sugar cane nucleotide sequence. Expression of the sequence-containing vector can impart greater resistance to abiotic stresses to the plant into which the vector is introduced. More generally, a polynucleotide is described that encodes a sugarcane polypeptide expressed by a promoter and a terminator that are operational in plants, this polynucleotide imparting resistance to various abiotic stresses.
