Juliana Carvalho Ferreira graduated in Medicine at the University of São Paulo Medical School in 1998. She completed a two-year residency program in Internal Medicine in 2001 and a two-year fellowship program in Pulmonology and Critical Care in 2003. She was a research fellow at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in 2005 and 2006, and received her PhD title in Medicine (Pulmonology) from the Universidade de São Paulo in 2008.She is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Sao Paulo Medical School and Attending Physician at the Respiratory ICU at Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da USP. She is also co-director of the ATS MECOR program in Latin America, a research capacity building program for LMICs, and president of the Brazilian Intensive care Research network (BRICNet). Her research and teaching focus on mechanical ventilation, patient-ventilation interaction, medical education and global health. It is the first recipient of the Philip Hopewell Prize for Global Respiratory Health Research Award, offered to mid-career researchers in low- and middle-income countries, recognized for their clinical and research commitment by the American Thoracic Society.
