Has a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1990), a master's degree (1997) and doctorate (2005) in Electrical Engineering from the University of São Paulo. Post-doctorates at the Linköpings Universitet (Sweden, 2009) and at the University of Sheffield (England, 2010). He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of São Paulo (USP), supervising at the Postgraduate Programs in Music (PPGMUS-ECA) and Information Systems (PPgSI-EACH). At USP, he coordinates the Laboratory for Audio and Music Technologies (LATM) at the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities (EACH) and the Audio Engineering and Coding Center (NEAC) at the Integrable Systems Laboratory (LSI-EPUSP), and is also a researcher with the Laboratory of Art, Media and Digital Technologies (LabArteMídia), the Sonology Research Center (NuSom) and with the Interdisciplinary Center for Interactive Technologies (CITI). He has experience in engineering, computing and music, working mainly in sound and music computing, audio engineering, signal processing, spatial audio, digital music and interactive sound systems. He is a collaborator of the Brazilian Digital TV System Forum and of the Ministry of Communications' WG on TV 3.0. He is a member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES), of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC), ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), the ABNT (Brazilian national standardization forum) Commission CE-021:000.029 Audio, Image, Multimedia and Hypermedia Coding Study (MPEG), and an expert at the ISO/IEC MPEG WG 6 (Audio).
