A graduate of Yale University, Lisa Earl Castillo holds a Ph.D. in Letras, with a concentration in Literary and Cultural Theory, from the Universidade Federal da Bahia. Her Ph.D. thesis examined the social practices and perceptions of writing within the oral tradition of candomblé. It was published in 2008, under the title "Entre a Oralidade e a Escrita: a Etnografia nos Candomblés da Bahia". Her post-doctoral research focuses on the life histories of African freedmen and women who returned to Africa, especially those who were involved in founding Bahia's oldest candomblé temple. Her areas of expertise, employing methodologies from cultural studies, anthropology and social history, also includes Afro-Brazilian popular culture in a broader sense. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
