Universidade de São Paulo (USP). Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ)  (Institutional affiliation for the last research proposal)
Birthplace: Brazil

Graduated in Biological Sciences at the State University of Campinas (1983), Master in Plant Biology at UNICAMP (1986), PhD in Plant Biology at UNICAMP (1992) and professor at the University of São Paulo (since 1987). Currently (since 2001) he is Titular Professor of the Biological Sciences Department of ESALQ/University of São Paulo and was Coordinator of the BIOTA Program of FAPESP from 2004 to 2009. He works in the area of Ecology and Forest Restoration and is the coordinator of the Laboratory of Ecology and Forest Restoration (LERF/LCB/ESALQ/USP), now 22 years old (www.lerf.esalq.usp.br), where are available the students graduated from LERF (IC, Ms, DR and PD), their published works and projects completed and in progress. He is currently an advisor at the post-graduation program of the State University of Campinas (Plant Biology) and at the University of São Paulo (programs: Forest Resources and Applied Ecology). He has oriented 96 professionals at Ms, Dr and PD levels. He has published 206 articles in national and international journals and 98 books and book chapters. At LERF he coordinates the Rural Property Environmental and Agricultural Adequacy Program, with 4,250,000 ha of areas in the process of environmental suitability of rural properties in Brazil, mainly Floresta Atlântica e Amazônia, with more than 19,200ha of restored riparian forests and more than 118,000ha of remaining forests recovered and protected. He was the coordinator of FAPESP's thematic project: "Ecological Restoration of Riparian Forests, Native Forests of Economic Production and Degraded Forest Fragments (in APP and RL), based on the Ecology of Restoration of Reference Ecosystems, aiming to scientifically test the precepts of the New Brazilian Forest Code", where he has more than 40 researchers involved, ranging from senior researchers, PhD students, master's students and scientific initiation students, which is being concluded in April 2020. In recent years (2010-2020) he has been a member of the Special Group of SBPC and ABC, for the improvement of the Brazilian Forest Code under evaluation in the STF, with several incursions in the Federal Chamber, Senate, Federal Executive and STF. He is also a member of the São Paulo State Compensation Chamber and a member of the TFCA Account Committee (use of Brazilian debt resources in biodiversity conservation). He has made an enormous effort in the production of non-academic publications to guide technicians and rural producers to good environmental practices and good public environmental policies, such as: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2ygqm4UOkI, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2tqWyYsrBU, http://www.lerf.eco.br/capa.asp?v=7, https://www.nature.org/media/brasil/manual-restauracao-mt.pdf, https://www.nature.org/media/brasil/cartilha-restauracao-mt.pdf, http://adaptaclima.mma.gov.br/conteudos/227.
