I am a full professor in the Department of Gerontology at UFSCar. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (1993-1997) and a PhD in Sciences, with an Area of concentration in Physiology, from the Federal University of São Carlos (2000-2004). I completed my doctoral internship (2002) in the Department of Microbiology, University of Virginia Health System, Charlottesville, VA, USA, and my postdoctoral studies (2005-2006) at the Institute de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM, Unité 553) in Paris, France. I was awarded a Visiting Fellowship (2015) by the University of Nottingham, England. I coordinate LABEN - Laboratory of Biology of Aging. I lead the Biology of Aging research group, registered in the CNPq research group directory. I supervise students in the Graduate Program in Gerontology (PPGGero/UFSCar), which is part of the Network of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs on Aging (REPRINTE). I also supervise students in the Interinstitutional Graduate Program in Physiological Sciences (UFSCar/UNESP). I am a reviewer for several journals in the areas of aging, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer, and a scientific advisor for Brazilian (CNPq and FAPESP) and foreign funding agencies (Alzheimer's Association, FONDECYT-Chile, Czech Science Foundation-Czech Republic, United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation, and The Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development). I am a member of the New Course Proposal Evaluation Committee (APCN) and the CAPES quadrennial evaluation committee, as well as the CAPES Interdisciplinary Thesis Award. I collaborate with several international institutions, such as Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, the University of Nottingham, UK, the University of Milan, Italy, the University of València and the University of Barcelona, Spain, the University of Quebec at Montreal, Canada, the Olivia Newton John Cancer Research Institute, Australia, the University of California, Berkeley, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Purdue University, USA. I am a Senior Atlantic Fellow for Equity in Brain Health at the Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI) at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. I develop university outreach projects focused on scientific communication and teacher training in the areas of brain health, aging, and dementia through the ARISE initiative. I have experience in Cell Biology and Biochemistry, with an emphasis on Molecular Biology, working primarily on the following topics: aging, the elderly, biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease, ADAMs, cancer, and mammalian cell culture.
