Dr Felipe Gusmao is an Associate Professor in Conservation and Biodiversity in the Institute of Marine Sciences at the Federal University of Sao Paulo (UNIFESP). He has a bachelor?s degree in Marine Sciences (Oceanology) from the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG Brazil), a Master's degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Sao Paulo (USP Brazil), and a PhD in Marine Biology and Aquaculture from James Cook University (JCU Australia). He is also a permanent member of the Environmental Engineering Postgraduate Program (PPGSEA) in the Sao Carlos School of Engineering at the University of Sao Paulo, and the Marine and Coastal Biodiversity and Ecology Postgraduate Program (PPGBEMC) in the Institute of Marine Sciences at the Federal University of Sao Paulo. He has developed research projects at several institutions such as the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), the University of Queensland (UQ), at the Centre for Marine Biology (CEBIMar) and the Centre for Water Resources and Applied Ecology (CRHEA) at University of Sao Paulo (USP). He has established collaborations and published with researchers from several countries including France, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, United States, Japan, Australia and Brazil. He has frequently contributed to science communication, having implemented and being the curator of popular science focused social media accounts. Throughout his career, he has actively promoted science through interviews for newspapers, tv, radio and the internet. He has broad interests in Environmental Sciences, having been developing research in various fields such as Ecology, Pollution and Risk Assessment. His current research focuses on understanding the multiple impacts in the environment and the complexity of the human-environment relationship. The ultimate goal of his research is contributing to the understanding of human interaction and perception of the environment, and the meaning the environment has for men, both from philosophical and applied perspectives.
