Birthplace: Brazil

I am Lara Arguelho, a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), where I teach disciplines in the areas of General Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Environmental Chemistry. My academic background includes a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), followed by my Master's and PhD in Sciences from the University of São Paulo (USP). More recently, I broadened my knowledge base with a Bachelor's degree in History and a specialization in Philosophy from University Estácio de Sá. My work spans three key areas across Teaching, Research, and Extension: One primary area is Analytical and Environmental Chemistry, which forms the foundation of my training and undergraduate teaching. My research in this field has largely focused on areas such as methodologies for analyzing emerging pollutants and the analysis of sediment and water in coastal environments. In recent years, I have increasingly dedicated my research to the study of biomass as fibrous matrices for the production of paper and ecological packaging. A second significant area is Science Education and Teaching. Within this strand, my role as a collaborating professor in the Graduate Program in Science and Mathematics Education (PPGECIMA) has been central to my research themes, which explore topics related to Full-Time Education, Teaching and Learning Methodologies, and the pedagogical and socioemotional aspects of teaching practice. My involvement in extension projects, such as the pedagogical advising of the Junior Enterprise and entrepreneurship training initiatives, also contributes significantly to this educational focus. The third area is a cross-cutting theme of Sustainability and its interfaces with Science, Technology, and Society (CTSA). This theme is integrated into various aspects of my work: through the disciplines I teach (like Environmental Education), in research topics (e.g., water/sediment analysis, ecological packaging, Education research), and in broader interests and projects including science outreach (via podcast) and the 2030 Agenda. It serves as a vital link connecting Chemistry to its application and impact on society and the environment. Furthermore, I have been actively involved in management. I previously served as Vice-Head of the Department of Chemistry, and currently hold positions as a council member of CONEPE [Council for Teaching, Research, and Extension] and Coordinator of Research [COPES] at UFS. Externally, I serve as president of the Sergipe regional branch of the Brazilian Association of Chemistry [ABQ] and a council member of the Regional Chemistry Council [CRQ] of the 8th Region.
